Antarctic Animals

Hello,

Read through the powerpoint together and see if you can answer and talk about some of the questions asked. You can then try an couple of the activities, `Label the penguin` and `What is it?´Also here is a poster that children can put up in their rooms, it shows the sizes of Antarctic animals. Let children compare the size of some of Antarctica's animals.
This fab poster is a great way for children to compare the size of some of Antarctica's most well-known animals.

Featuring scale illustrations of 16 different animals, children will be fascinated to see how some of Antarctica's animals compare to humans.

It's often difficult for children to imagine the immense proportions of a blue whale, or to imagine just how tall an emperor penguin is compared to themselves when faced with units of measurement. This handy poster will give children a clearer impression of these wonderful Antarctic animals.

Some of the animals in the poster appear in 'The Runaway Iceberg'.

How big is a blue whale?
A blue whale is the largest animal to have ever lived on Earth. They can weigh as much as 200 tonnes. For comparison, a double-decker bus only weighs 12 tonnes! Its tongue alone can weigh as much as as adult elephant.

A blue whale's diet is mostly comprised of krill (tiny crustaceans). One adult blue whale can eat as much as 4 tonnes of krill per day. Blue whales are also the loudest animals on the planet - their cries can be even louder than a jet engine!
