The Virgin on the Rocks

Virgin of the Rocks

Virgin of the Rocks is a painting by Leonardo da Vinci, painted between 1495 and 1508. The painting was painted with oil on panel. There are actually two versions of this painting, one in London and one in Paris. The composition of these paintings is almost identical.

It was originally thought that the London version might have been painted by Vinci’s assistants, but a closer look has led the conservators to conclude that it is indeed painted by da Vinci.

It was sold to Gavin Hamilton in 1780s and he brought it to England. After passing through several collections, the painting was bought by the National Gallery in 1880.

We chose the painting because it’s beautiful and quite interesting. The colors look pretty, and the painting is pleasant to look at.
