Autumn
The creation of Enkkumaa play environments in all of the groups where there are 5-6 year olds has been our biggest project this autumn. Bit by bit, and through wonderful team work, we've created fantastic and beautiful environments where we go each week to learn and play in English. Below you can see the vocabulary we've learnt!
Numbers 1-10
Counting in English is something that we come back to regularly. Through repetition we learn! There are numerous ways to practice counting and numbers with kids - for example, try playing 'Hide and Seek' in English!
Colours. We played 'change places if', where you have to change places if you're wearing a certain colour, and 'Colour Mirror', which is a familiar game to the children. Classic games are great for language learning, when the game is familiar, the kids know what to do and what to expect, then they can focus on the target vocabulary and it's fun! Many traditional games can be exploited in this way.

Pets
We had great fun with animal pantomine, can you guess what animal I am? We also played 'Poisonous animal' and a memory game with the animal words. Using the same vocabulary in different activities over a period of a few weeks helps us to stay interested and learn the vocabulary really well.

Fruit
The 'fruit monster' introduced us to the fruit words, and we had fun playing 'Stealing from the nest', amongst other games, with the fruits. The theme ended with a functional language learning session where the children prepared their own fruit salads according to the instructions they received in English. This was a really popular activity in all groups and you can imagine how good it tasted when we made it ourselves! We also got good practice cutting and preparing the fruit. Afterwards the feedback from one preschool group was 'The best Enkku ever!'

In the run up to Christmas we learnt some Christmas themed vocabulary and following instructions in English to colour in the Christmas colouring picture. We have learnt so many English words, that we could do this superbly well!

We read the book 'Stick Man' by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler

which introduced us to the idea that in England Santa comes down the chimney and delivers presents to children in the night, and learnt the song When Santa got stuck up the chimney
