Lecture 2 Culture and organizations: software of the mind

This lecture begins with a brief recap to Geert Hofstede’s work regarding five cultural dimensions. During his work by IBM, Hofstede had the opportunity to study the culture in50 countries, and out of that data he developed an important framework of international cultures.

Then, professor Tjeldvoll explains culture on individual level as mental programming calling it “software of the mind”. Then, he stresses cultural relativism stating that each culture to be assessed on its own preconditions. At the end of the class we also learn the different level culture can be seen: Gender, generation, social class, and organization/ company.
