Infinitiiviä käytetään ilman to-partikkelia seuraavissa tapauksissa:

1. Modaalisen apuverbin jälkeen
   We can do this!
   You cannot have been there.
2. Aistimusta ilmaisevan verbin jälkeen
   I felt the earth move.
   We saw the plane crash.
   Näiden verbien jälkeen voi tulla myös -ing-muoto ilman suurta merkityseroa.
   Passiivissa näiden verbien kanssa tulee joko infinitiivi to-partikkelin kanssa tai -ing-muoto.
   They were seen to leave/leaving the building.
3. Verbien let, make, have ja help jälkeen, kun niitä seuraa objekti + verbi
   Let me go.
   They made me swear I wouldn't tell anyone.
   I'm going to have my neighbor fix it.
   I was trying to help you understand the situation.
   Kun make-verbi muutetaan passiiviin tai let-verbi vaihdetaan passiiviseen be allowed to -lausekkeeseen, käytetään to-partikkelia.
   We were made to wait in the hallway.
   Jill wasn't allowed to play with other children.
4. Tietyissä sanonnoissa

   rather + verbi	I'd rather go home than stay here.
   had better + verbi	You'd better hurry up!
   do nothing but + verbi	We did nothing but study all night.
   why (not) + verbi	Why not tell him you're sorry?

5. Come- ja go-verbien kanssa käskyissä, pyynnöissä ja kehotuksissa
   Come sit with me.
   Go (and) take another piece.
   Joskus come-verbin jälkeen voi tulla myös -ing-muoto, varsinkin jos kyseessä on "urheilullinen" aktiviteetti, mutta infinitiivi on yleisempi.

Ing-muotoa käytetään seuraavissa tapauksissa:

1. Kestomuodossa (olla-verbin be jälkeen)
   Shut up! I'm studying English.
   I have been reading this same page for an hour.
   We are being taught grammar.
2. Adjektiivina
   We saw a dancing gorilla.
3. Substantiivina
   Walking to school improves your health.
4. Preposition jälkeen
   I'm tired of listening to you.
   She's good at writing essays.
   He insists on us doing our homework.
5. Tiettyjen sanontojen jälkeen

   be busy	He was busy doing something else.
   be nothing like	There's nothing like running in the rain.
   can't help	I can't help singing when I hear this song.
   can't stand	They can't stand queuing.
   be used to	She's used to being the smartest person in the room.
   be worth	The book is worth reading.
   feel like	I don't feel like taking this test.
   be no good/use	It's no good talking to him. It's no use crying over spilt milk.
   look forward to	I look forward to hearing from you.
