Cover letter
A cover letter (sometimes also known as a motivation letter), is your way of introducing yourself to a potential employer, outlining why you're the right person for the job. It is a formal letter you will submit alongside your CV each time you apply for a job, and should be specific to each role. It is your opportunity to tell them about yourself and what makes you unique to any other candidate.
For the most part, employers really expect to see this and are surprised if you don’t provide one. In most cases it is not compulsory but definitely advised.
Cover letters aren't just for job applications, they can also be used if you're applying for internships or when taking out a loan. It is also a great resource to use, if there is a company you really want to work for, but they aren't hiring at the moment

CV
A curriculum vitae or CV usually contains about two pages. It includes a summary of your educational, professional and academic background as well as a list of your publications, presentations, awards, honours and other details. Your CV should be clear, short, complete and up-to-date. Use appropriate English.
Personal details
Here's some advice on 7 things to leave off your CV by Glass door
- A Language You Only Studied in secondary school - Sure, you took French in high school for a few years, but are you really at a level where you feel comfortable holding everyday conversations with native speakers, or reading in that language? If the answer is “no,” it doesn’t belong on your CV.
- Basic Computer Skills Like Email and Microsoft Word - Listing “email” or “Microsoft Word” as skills is almost equivalent to listing “reading” or “basic maths”. They’re not differentiators — they’re expected. Adding these can be seen as trying to bulk out your CV. The exception to this is if you’ve honed a very specific practice using these programs
- Social media - Your personal and professional brand are two completely different things. Unless you're applying for a social media strategist role, you shouldn't be mentioned you social media ‘skills’, even if you do post great pictures and have thousands of friends.
- Soft skills - You can still include these but they need to be demonstrated through examples rather than stated flat. Listing out soft skills can be seen as though you are trying to ensure that the employer sees you have these skills. Saying that you’re a good communicator, for example, is useless without concrete examples to support it. Instead of listing ‘multitasking’ or ‘leadership’ as a skill, candidates should write ‘led multiple concurrent projects through to completion leading to x% ROI’ under the relevant position.
- Exaggerations or Flat-Out Lies - Yes we’ve told you to include a variety of keywords from the job description in your CV, but if you don’t have one of the skills listed, you shouldn’t include it just for the sake of mirroring the language. The truth will always come out. Remember - you dont need to have every single skill listed in the job description to apply for a job — a good rule of thumb is that you should be an 80 to 90 percent match.
- Outdated Tech - Technology is constantly updating so its important to stay up to date, otherwise, you risk looking like you’re unable to keep up in a dynamic workplace. In a competitive market, employers want to invest people who have demonstrated an ability to learn quickly
- Irrelevant or Joke skills - This may sound obvious, but there truly are people who still list things like “expert-level guacamole maker” or “certified ping-pong champ” on their CV. Do not include skills that are irrelevant to the job you are applying for.
