Lecture 3 Authority and its challenges

Lecture 3 (historical perspective III) begins with Sigmund Freud, who cannot be placed clearly in any of the eras presented. Then, the lecture goes on to the main theme: authority and its challenges. From the early years the ideas are presented by the following thinkers and writers: John Locke, David Hume, John Dewey, Thomas Hobbes (one leader concept ‘Great Man concept’), Karl Marx, Frederick Engels, W.E.B. DuBois.

Assignment after all three lectures: You are to write a journal (short essay) under the topic: “Significance of the early years of the development of organization theory and theory & practice of leadership.”

You will select one classical writer from a list provided (historical perspective I-III) and will write a short essay (2-3 pgs.) of his/her perspectives on

- organization
- leadership/management
