Course overview

The goal of this course is to orient students to pedagogic leadership and to prepare the way for students to develop their own pedagogic leadership. Through studying the concept of pedagogic leadership and sharing practical experiences, the aim is to enable students to build their own models for pedagogic leadership. Besides pedagogic leadership, the concepts of shared leadership and teacher leadership are dealt with. During the course, central characteristics of pedagogic, shared and teacher leadership will be addressed: what they are, why they are important, what role context plays, and how one builds and applies one’s own model for pedagogic leadership. Special emphasis is given to teacher leadership which is both a new concept in its present meaning and a key element of successful pedagogic leadership at schools.

Session 1 Orientation: Dealing with the Contexts
Session 2 The concept of Pedagogic Leadership
Session 3 The Concepts of shared and teacher leadership
Session 4 Fundamentals of Teacher Leadership
Session 5 Skills, Attributes and Knowledge of Teacher Leaders
Session 6 Confronting Organizational and Cultural Barriers of Teacher Leadership
Session 7 Developing Teacher Leaders and Summarizing Teacher Leadership
Session 8 Conclusion: Summing Up the Context and the Concepts

The learning process is designed to enable you to develop your own model of pedagogic leadership understanding the concepts of pedagogic, shared and teacher leadership and the significance of context. There are nine sessions in this course. Each session consists of lectures dealing with the themes of the session.

Your task is to go through the sessions, read the required literature, watch the lectures and do the assignments included in the sessions and lectures. Each session and lecture includes the instructions for your assignments before and after the session and lecture.

After every lecture you are expected to write a reflective report on the lecture. The reflective reports are to include your own personal perceptions on the lecture and are not normally commented by the teacher of the course.

After every session you are expected to write a more detailed assignment. Write these assignments in the workbook and use them in your course assignment. The purpose of the session assignments is to guide your learning process and to enable you to participate in the course in a similar way as campus students. For the session assignments you will get feedback from the teacher.
