Lecture 3 Motivation theory and practice

Lecture 3 Motivation theory and practice

Lecture 3 goes deeper into the motivation theory and its application in real work settings. We learn how positive reinforcement can encourage wanted behaviours. And also, how removing negative reinforcement also motivates the people. The third classical motivation theory, Hetrzberg’s two-factor theory explains the mechanism of how motivators and de-motivators influence people's satisfaction level at work. Please follow the exercise instruction given by professor Alava and listen to the debriefing of the exercise carefully.

Before any lecture either open or save to your computer the assigned PowerPoint presentations.

Assignment before the lecture:

  1. Read the article Herzberg's theory of motivation
  2. Before listening to the lecture, please think of two real-life cases.
    1. Think about a case or one event in your recent history at work, which made you feel really well; a situation, which made you feel really good and motivated.
    2. Think about a case or one event in your recent history at work, which made you feel really bad; a situation, which made you feel really unsatisfied and de-motivated.

Follow the instruction given by Professor Alava and mark the key motivator and de-motivator from your cases.
