Lecture 6 Occupations and profiles

Lecture 6 focuses in two important aspects - cognitive styles' alignment with occupations and risk-bearing situations in interaction. First, we will learn that certain occupations are closely related to certain cognitive styles, for example engineers with analytical thinking. Second, the lecture emphasizes interaction and ways to improve it. This issue is dealt with the example of risk-bearing situation. This can take place when people with opposite cognitive styles communicate.

Assignment before the lecture: Please do the assignment given by the professor Alava in the beginning of the lecture: 1. Locate your own dominance, 2. then think another person who is the opposite of your strong dominance, 3. of that person think about what aspects in the behavior of that person you like and what you do not like. By doing this exercise you will learn how you relate to different styles.

Write your learning experiences into your personal Reflective report

Assignment after the lecture: Choose one person in your own organization/group, with whom you want to be more effective in interpersonal relations, or a person who has different profiles from what you have. Examine different real life situations in communication using the framework presented in the lecture. If possible, examine the situations with the person you chose, and try to find out together a way to increase mutual understanding and communication.
