1 - The story and characters of the document
Fuocoammare - fire at sea (2016)

2 - Technical execution
Traditional Italian music was used in many parts of the movie, which built a great atmosphere. The music also created some confrontation; in the refugee scenes there was always a lot of noise in the background, when on the other hand the scenes with local people involved had a quiet and calm background music.
In some parts of the movie the use of color symbolism could be seen. For example a dangerous situation contained red lights. The filming methods brought out the atmosphere well and the different camera angles kept the viewers interested. The way of filming was simple and artistic, and it made the document pleasing to watch. Even though the refugees weren’t interviewed and they didn’t express how they feel with words, the scenes with refugees involved gave an outlook on their situation and feelings.
3 - Discussion and the message of the movie
Why didn’t the movie only portray refugees? Or was it the purpose of the movie to show the difference between locals and refugees? When refugees arrive at Lampedusa, their photos are taken as if they were criminals.
When Samuele goes to get his eyes checked, is it a message about how Europeans don’t see the refugees’ situation properly? Are Europeans only trying to fix nonexistent problems about themselves, when they could help others that need help, instead?
There were many motives in the movie, for example the sea, the radio, war play and boats. The movie makes you think what Europeans should do to help refugees. It is hard to find an answer to this, but at least we need more workforce and a way to help. Should we for example make a safer way to bring refugees to Europe?
4 - Evaluation
The movie was good, and it gave an impression of how terrible a refugee’s journey can be. At some point it started to feel like the footage was too long and boring, but it didn’t bother too much. It was a good and a bad thing that the movie didn’t go straight to the point. It got a bit tiring, but also gave us a chance to think about these things ourselves without giving us the answers straight away.
