Lecture 2 What matters in nation building

Lecture 2 What matters in nation building

The second lecture in this session emphasizes the role of the context in educational administration and leading schools. Professor Alava discusses this topic using two very different countries, Finland and Nepal, as examples of how changes in the task environment, the context, strongly affect the entire thinking about educational administration.

The lecture begins with professor Alava talking about his own experiences as a teacher in the 1970’s when he had his first position as a teacher. We learn what it meant when the educational administration was very hierarchical. Professor Alava also explains the turning point from this extremely top-down administration, which he calls the beginning of the silent revolution, towards a totally different thinking administration.
