My Dream House /writing assignment

My Dream House – a writing assignment to be written AT SCHOOL

1) HOMEWORK from Friday 19 September: Preparation at home for Tuesday’s lesson (23 September 2025)

a) Search online for 5-7 ”inspirational pictures” of ”your dream house”:
- pictures from outside: eg. the house itself, garden? pool area? etc. and inside: eg. living room, bedroom, kitchen etc. (Notice that the indoor pictures don't have to be from one and the same house in reality!)
- save the pictures on your Chromebook (eg: Word / Powerpoint /Google docs)

b) Inspired by your pictures: Create a HANDWRITTEN mind map in your notebook about the main things that you want to mention in your essay (ie. objects, furniture, household appliances, adjectives to describe the objects/rooms etc. = key words in English.)

2) At school on Tuesday 23rd September + 20min on Friday 26th December:
Write a cohesive and descriptive essay (= yhtenäinen kuvaileva kirjoitelma) about your dream house. (Handwritten on paper – not digitally, so it is easy for the teacher to mark it.)

How to start?

1) Introduction:

- location: eg. in a big city or in the countryside; by a lake? by the sea? in the middle of a desert?; in the jungle? etc.

- type of housing: detached house? mansion? flat in a scyscraper?, farmhouse? modern? old-fashioned?
- how many rooms?
- anything unusual?

2) Going into more detail...

- eg. Dealing with 3-4 rooms: describe more accurately what certain rooms include and what they look like: style, furniture, household appliances, materials, colours; modern technology etc

- What is your favourite room and why? What do you like to do there?

- Also tell something about the surrounding area outside the house: eg. peaceful neighborhood? garden? woods? etc.

- Length of the essay = DOESN'T HAVE TO BE VERY LONG = about 200 words (or as long as you are able to write in 45 + (if necessary: 20 minutes)

3) Later on....
Once the teacher has marked your essay, you will be asked to read your essay out loud to your partner and show them the pictures that you used as your inspiration.
