- to practise using English source pages
- to learn to pick and choose essential and interesting pieces of information from the sources
- to learn how to present the information in a clear and concise written form
- to learn how to present the information to the other members of your group in an engaging manner (speaking loudly and clearly)
- to learn to listen to the other members of your group and learn new things from them

WORK PROCESS AND SCHEDULE

Monday, 24th October
a) Forming groups of 5-6 students ("home groups") WHERE EACH STUDENT CHOOSES ONE OF THE TOPICS BELOW (DIFFERENT TOPIC FOR EACH!) 

b) In class + Homework for Tuesday: Study the source pages - read what information they offer


Tuesday 25th October
c) Independent work:
- search for information from the source pages of YOUR OWN TOPIC
- As source pages in this assignment ONLY USE THE LINKS PROVIDED BELOW (+ possible sublinks on those pages)
- take notes and create a digital (Powerpoint) presentation in English 
- google for PICTURES to back up the information you are presenting  (Don't use too much space or too big pictures - the presentation will be printed out and made into a poster later on)

Monday 31st October
e) Preparing the presentation continues at school

g) Present (show and tell) your presentation to your own homegroup: What did I learn? What did I find out? What should you know about...?

h) Finally: submit the presentation into to folder below. The teacher will then print them out to be made into posters.

1) Britain /the UK / the British Isles / England /Scotland /Wales / Northern Ireland

- explain the difference between and the location of the following geographical areas / concepts / terms : 

- The British Isles, Great Britain vs Britain, United Kingdom, England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland,
- as visual aid, try to find CLEAR MAPS to demonstrate the locations
- maybe include some photos of what the different parts of the UK look like in general when it comes to nature and landscapes, for example (the most well-known landmarks?)
- explain how British people identify themselves (eg. Do the Scotts want to be referred to as being English?)


2) Daily Life: British food

- Explain the various meanings of "tea" for the Britts!
(it's not only a drink - it refers to a certain mealtime!)


3) Festivals and celebrations:

- present some of the celebrations and special holidays and customs and traditions related to them (especially the ones that we don't celebrate in Finland!) 
- focus on finding out WHY people celebrate on that day and HOW do they celebrate

4) The Queen (and the new King? - if you like) (Regarding the Queen, naturally partly outdated information - you may google for updates from other pages)

5) Symbols

- What is Britain known for?
- Which things are considered typically "British"?
- Which things symbolise Britain and why?

Don't deal with the topic "Famous people" here, because it is a separate topic to be dealt with by another member of your group.

6) Sports

- focus particularly some of the less well-known sports for us Finns: eg. cricket, tennis (Wimbledon!!!), horse racing, netball, rugby, polo, university boat races, darts

- focus on people with a well-established reputation in history, NOT on present-day "passing" celebrities!

8) Multicultural Britain:

- Find out about the people's origins and the different reasons why they have immigrated to Britain?
