10. Industrial regions

10.1 Europe's industrial centers

The Earth is home to a number of concentrated industrial regions.

The oldest industrial regions in the world are located in Europe. The industrial revolution began in the British Isles in the 18th century. From there, it spread to Western and Central Europe, eventually reaching the northernmost parts of Italy. Industry concentrated in these regions, because sources of energy and raw materials were plentiful in these European nations.

The largest industrial regions in Russia are located near Moscow and the Ural mountains. Like industry in Central and Western Europe, Russian industry is also based on its vast supplies of raw materials and energy. Russia's natural gas supplies are the largest in the world, and its oil and coal supplies are likewise among the richest on the planet.

10.2 Asia's industrial centers

The most significant industrial centers of the Asian continent are located in China, South Korea and Japan. These nations have specialized in the production of machinery, vehicles and electronics.

China is the largest producer of motorized vehicles in the world. Japan and South Korea are among the top five on the same list. In addition, China has already surpassed the United States as the largest industrial nation on the planet.

Due to automatization and the availability of cheap labor, many companies from developed nations have moved a significant portion of their industrial production into Asian developing nations . For example, India contains many significant industrial centers in regions near metropolises such as Mumbai and Delhi. These industrial centers concentrate primarily on producing goods for companies based in other nations.

10.3 Industry in North America

In North America, industry was originally concentrated near the Great Lakes region on the border of the United States and Canada. The Appalachian mountains produced coal, which was used as the energy source to refine iron ore mined near the Great Lakes. This region grew to the shores of the Atlantic and into Canada, becoming one of the global centers of heavy industry.

Nowadays, the significance of heavy industry has declined in North America. It has recently begun to be replaced by forms of industry that are reliant on high technology. The Silicon Valley of California is well known for its solid-state industry. The headquarters of many important technological businesses, such as Apple and Facebook, are located in Silicon Valley.
