About the School

Lohja Upper Secondary School is located on the wooded, picturesque Pohjolanmäki hill overlooking the City Hall and the brand new Public Library. Since it was founded in 1914, the school has been an integral part of local history (historypages of the school).

The school building, designed by Arne Ervi in the functionalistic style, was completed in 1954 and was at the time the largest in Scandinavia.

In 1988 the school underwent a thorough refurbishing and since then has only catered for upper secondary students.
In 1991 the evening school moved in to share the premises. To better meet the challenges of a growing student body and new technology, the buildings were again renovated in 2008/9.

The nearby sports centre Tennari has a new annexe which meets the needs of PE and the twice yearly matriculation examinations.
Panu Ruoste has been headmaster since 2002, in which time the school has had a yearly average of 700 students on roll. Each year approximately 200 students gain their white caps, symbolising their successful completion of their matriculation exam.

Lohja Upper Secondary School also serves the educational needs of students from neighbouring municipalities including Karjalohja, Siuntio, and Nummi-Pusula.

The students have access to a wide curriculum and range of courses, both compulsory and optional, basic and advanced. The language programme allows a student to choose from seven foreign languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, and Latin.

The non-graded system enables each student to build their own unique study programme to meet their personal aspirations, interests and skill potential.

By collaborating with local vocational secondary schools, students have the opportunity to gain a double qualification from e.g. health, sports, youth work and business. Those aiming for a professional sports career are supported in combining their training programmes with the school syllabus.
