You never know

Tony, 22:

When I was in comprehensive school I was a real handful for both my parents and the teachers. My friends and I used to get into all kinds of trouble. At weekends we usually hung out in town drinking and smoking. One Saturday evening when I was fourteen we were at a friend’s house. His parents were obviously away. After a few beers I got the brilliant idea of going for a ride on my friend’s new moped. I was going about 55 km per hour – yes, my friend had tuned his moped – when I suddenly saw a flash of blue light at the corner of my eye. A few seconds later I also heard the siren. It was a police car and they were after me. Being the smart kid that I was, I didn’t stop, instead I tried to get away from them. I figured they couldn’t follow me if I took a smaller road. Of course, I was wrong. They kept following me all the way to a castle where the car chase ended embarrassingly. I realised too late that I was heading for the moat around the castle. I tried to brake but it was too late and in I went with a great big splash. I’m sure glad I could swim and it was August so the water wasn’t freezing. They got me and the moped out of the water.

So I was guilty of driving without a licence, drunk driving, riding a tuned moped, speeding and fleeing from the police. The consequences? You can imagine how furious my parents were. And my friend’s parents when they found out what their son had done to his moped. I also had to pay for the moped being towed out of the moat. It wasn’t cheap! To top it all the policeman told me that I wouldn’t be able to get a driver’s licence until I was twenty. The good thing was that I realised how stupidly I had been behaving. After the incident I somehow got more sensible and started paying more attention to my studies and less to my friends’ silly stunts.

Now almost ten years later I’m studying at university. When I was 18 I had some problems getting a summer job because most of the jobs I wanted required a valid driver’s licence. I don’t expect that the moped incident will have any other effect on my life. I was lucky I didn’t hurt anyone with my reckless driving or get hurt myself.

Nina, 21:

I had always been a good girl. We moved when I was 13. It was difficult for me to make friends first because I was shy. One day Maria, one of the most popular girls in our class, asked me to go shopping with a bunch of girls. I was so happy! We went to the local mall and had a lot of fun together. Then in a clothes shop, Maria suddenly asked me to steal a shirt for her. I tried to say no but she made it very clear that if I wanted to be part of the gang I had to do it. It was a test that all the other girls had passed, too. They all encouraged me and said it was easy. I finally agreed. I suppose you’ve already guessed it. I got caught. When I refused to open my bag, they called the police and my parents. The policewoman who searched my bag found the shirt. Luckily, I was too young to get a criminal record.

I never thought it would come up or affect my life in any way. After all, it only happened once. Some time ago I applied for a job: a store manager’s position in a well-known chain of clothes stores. I was asked to come to a job interview. I was really excited, it was a dream job for me. I knew I had a good chance of landing the job, I had experience and suitable education. As I entered the interview room I realised in horror that the interviewer was the sales person who had caught me all those years ago. I was sure she wouldn’t be able to remember me but she did. She said she couldn’t give the job to a thief. No matter how hard I tried to convince her that it was a one-off and I had changed, she simply ignored my explanations. I couldn’t believe I lost my dream job for a stupid mistake I made when I was thirteen.

Australia urges people to save water

Gone are the subtropical rains in Queensland, Australia. The drought has been going on since 2002. It has rained even less this year in Brisbane. By August the rainfall was only 290 mm whereas last year the amount was 430 mm during the same period. The lack of rain has led to even tougher restrictions on water usage: watering gardens is only allowed once a week for a certain time period after dark, washing cars is only permitted in a car wash, the recommended maximum shower length is four minutes. (1, 2)

During the last five years average water consumption has gone down from 280 litres to 140 litres a day per inhabitant. The Ledger family is doing even better, their daily usage is only 70 litres per person. “Our two small children take baths together, my husband and I shower for two or three minutes. When we brush our teeth we don’t leave the tap running, we do our dishes in very little water and we wait for the washing machine to fill up completely before putting it on. We can’t afford to waste water any more. We can’t just rely on the government, it’s up to us all to start saving water. It’s hard at first but you get used to it with time” says Mrs Ledger. (3–5)

One solution to the water shortage is the new desalination plant that produces drinking water from seawater. Still, building more plants is not the answer because the desalination process is expensive and consumes a large amount of energy. Because of the drought the hydro power plants are producing less energy than before. “We have a major problem on our hands. We are doing research into alternative sources of energy such as wind power and solar power”, says Peter Badger from the state council. “We need to find new solutions because the population of Brisbane is growing weekly by 1,500 inhabitants. As a result, the need for drinking water is increasing rapidly even if people have cut down on their water consumption. This year we will start adding up to 20 percent of cleaned sewage water into the drinking water. I know the idea of drinking something that came from the toilet is disgusting to many but we have no choice. We don’t want the situation to get worse.” (6–9)

The Government’s opinion is that there is not enough research to prove the connection between the drought and global warming. Australia is the largest coal producer in the world and doesn’t want to limit the use of fossil fuels that cause greenhouse gases. (10, 11)

I took part a conference last summer. I had to talk children’s rights (edessä) hundreds of people.
Earlier that year I had travelled (Bangladeshiin) Bangladesh to visit children living in labour camps and the streets. The audience
listened me in silence when I told them that the children often
have to pay more (maksaa jostakin) their food and accommodation than they earn. The children in developing countries can’t fight
their rights themselves. That’s why the rest of us have to help them.
the end of the conference week my organisation had received
more than 100,000 euros in donations (osallistujilta) the participants of the conference.
