Dimitra Batzi 2016

Hei!

Terve! Minun nimeni on Dimitra ja olen opettaja. Minä olen Kreikasta ja puhun englantia, kreikkaa ja vähän suomea. Olen asunut Joensuussa kuusi kuukautta. That’s what I learned during my stay in Finland (thanks to first grade pupils) so now I continue in English.
Last summer I finished my studies in Greece in the Faculty of Primary Education in the University of Athens. The completion of my studies is what made me want to search for alternative ways of gaining experience in my field while getting to know the foreign job market, and the Erasmus+ program is the perfect way to do both.
Why Finland and why Mutalan school? I chose Finland firstly because of the great educational system and also because of the big differences on the living between Greece. Then I chose Mutalan school because when I read the reasons that they were asking international students I found out that we were having the same expectations and also the fact that it is located in Joensuu, a small city, helped me to overcome my doubts because I wanted to see how is the life in a small city compared to Athens that I come from.
Before my internship started I expected to get familiar with the finish educational system and the culture. In the begging it wasn’t easy to be in Joensuu, but thanks to the help of the principal Risto and my mentor Olavi Kuokka I found a family that I am living with. In the school I visited every class and spend time with teachers and pupils. I observed various ways of teaching and that is really important for my career. When I got familiar with the school I started having my own projects. With the first, second and third grade we had Greek language and Greek culture project, with fourth grade we had Heracles project, magazine, Kalevala and individual teaching project and with fifth grade we had Greek history week. All of them gave me great experience and pupils seemed to enjoy them!
What I like most is to meet people and share ideas and that is what I succeeded in Mutalan School with teachers and pupils. In Finland I learned how to survive on -30 degrees and still to wait for the winter. I tried cross country skiing, downhill skiing, skating, snow swimming and ice swimming and I liked all of them. I am also happy that I was lucky to see the northern lights.
Now my internship reached its end and I should say goodbye. I am really happy that I chose this school because teachers, pupils, assistant teachers and other exchange students were welcoming and made my ambitions come true. I would definitely recommend this school to everyone who would like to become Finish. Now I am ready to continue my career as a teacher after this amazing start. I feel that everything is possible to happen and people around you are really important to help you build anything you dream of.
I want to thank my mentor Olavi Kuokka that he took so good care of my stay in Joensuu and not only at school and everyone from Mutalan school!
Kiitos!
Nähdään!
