Lecture 4 Strategic learning circle and vicious circle
Lecture 4 Strategic learning circle and vicious circle
Professor Alava develops an important framework in order to analyze organizational learning. The framework is based on two new concepts: strategic gap and organizational entropy. Pay special attention to the framework with two axes and on the development of two possible paths for organizational development, the learning cycle and the vicious cycle. This framework also serves as one to be used in the final assignment of this course ELSS820.

Using the framework of vicious circle & learning circle presented in the lectures, make an analyses of an organization you know. Select an organization that can be traced back for several years. The organization can be an educational institute or it can be in this assignment also a private organization. Only, it is important that you either know it rather well or can acquire good information about it. The framework is intended to analyze long-term development, five years and more.
The assignment has two parts: 1) Draw the developmental plan, and 2) write shortly the description of the developmental path, and make a short analyses using the material given in lectures.
- In drawing the developmental path, use the framework presented, and the technique professor Alava explained in the lecture. Note, that the path of your organization can be anywhere in the framework and it may take any turns or paths. A good starting point of the positioning could be a crises or a troublesome situation (if there has been one). In that case spot that event in the chart, and the backward map the path of the organization.
- Write shortly the key points of the path presented in part 1 of the assignment. Then, if possible, try to locate what the organization did especially in the cases where its path TURNED either down or to the left (remember from the lecture that these were the events when learning took place). Use max 5 pgs.
This is an individual assignment.
