Outside like a snowman

“Outside like a snowman”

23th of February 2018

Suomen latu - The Outdoor Association of Finland - organized a campaign called “Outside like a snowman” to celebrate its 80th birthday in 2018. The aim of the campaign was to build as many snowmen as possible all around Finland.

Kirkkomännikkö school took part in the campaign too, and we spent a sunny but freezing Friday on Kirkkojärvi (Church lake) in the center of Alavus designing and building all kinds of snowmen.

With this project, we combined art and crafts with a cheery winter day spent outside. This was also the last day before the winter break, so it was nice to step outside the classrooms.

The school is getting ready to leave.

Arriving on the ice. The weather was beautiful but really cold.

Some pupils and teachers had worked hard and prepared huge blocks of snow beforehand for every class, so it was easy to start to build according to each group’s plan.

The pupils used shovels, saws, knives, spoons and whatever they could get their hands on to build the snowmen.

We had several small fires on the ice where it was possible to grill sausages. The fires also helped to keep fingers warm in the cold weather.

Here are the some of the snowmen:

A snow cat appeared on the ice as well.

Small and cute.

22nd of February 2019:

This year the same campaign took place as well. This time we didn’t build as many snowmen as the year before, but the results were just as great. The weather was quite cold again, so most of us just concentrated on keeping ourselves warm.

Friday morning was beautiful, misty but very cold.

The view on Church lake (Kirkkojärvi).

Fires and hot sausages kept us warm.

Snow blocks were waiting for their sculptors.

This icy lady is clearly ready for the summer!

The snow on the ground was so hard that these boys were able to saw big snow tiles and build an igloo.

This sporty fellow had brought skis.

He has a passion for the forest and nature.
