Write a composition of 700–1,300 characters in English on one of the topics below, following the instructions. Spaces and line breaks are not included in the character count. Please note that the recommended minimum number of characters is 700. If you write less, it is very difficult to fulfill task requirements.

1. Let’s talk about money 99 p.

Youth magazine Young and Successful asks its readers: What is the best way for young people leaving school to manage their money? Should you be saving in a bank account or investing in the stock market, or is there some other way that you would suggest? Write your recommendations and give reasons for them.

 
2. What can you do to promote biodiversity? 99 p.

The International Youth for Biodiversity organisation is offering a prize for the best essay on biodiversity. Climate change is a recognised threat to our future, but now more and more people are raising the alarm about the loss of biodiversity. Every ninth species in Finland is endangered. What can you do to help change this trend? Offer a practical solution and explain how you would convince others to follow your example.

 
3. Plain English 99 p.


The Plain English Campaign has said that many texts, like the terms of use for Internet services like Instagram, are too hard for people who are not lawyers to understand. Where else would Plain English be needed? Write a speech for the participants of the International Youth Forum outlining some other areas where Plain English should be used. Don’t forget to give reasons.

 
4. The villain as the hero 99 p.

Take a well-known story and rewrite it, casting the villain as the hero. For example, how does Cinderella work from the perspective of the wicked stepmother, or, what would the story of Star Wars be like, if Darth Vader were the hero? Remember to mention what story you are rewriting.

5. Is it ok to cheat? 99 p.

Your school’s debate club has a debate on the topic of cheating and whether it is ever acceptable. People have discussed cheating from the point of view of job applications and con artists. Talk about cheating in a specific context and give your reasons for why cheating is ok or not ok. Write your speech.
