Instructions for the oral test:

Record a discussion with a partner on video, lasting about 5 minutes
(MAX 7 minutes!), in which you talk about topics related to the theme given at the start of the test.

  • If possible RECORD THE DISCUSSION using an iPhone (this makes it easy to AirDrop it to the teacher)

  • If you don’t have an iPhone, ask the teacher to borrow a school iPad – however, note that the microphone quality is very poor, so the device must be kept very close while speaking

  • Use the given prompt questions as support, but also ask each other as many follow-up questions as possible – the discussion can “wander” a bit freely as long as you generally stay on topic

  • Consider the topics from different perspectives and always try to justify your opinions and/or give more detailed examples of different situations

  • Try to make the discussion as interactive (= natural) as possible: show that you are listening with small comments or sounds, respond to each other’s opinions, and react to them (e.g. “I agree” / “I’m not sure I agree” / “What exactly do you mean when you said…?” etc.)

  • Be careful not to dominate the discussion – give your partner space and encourage them to speak as much as possible (for example, by asking follow-up questions)

  • Take turns leading the discussion, e.g. by introducing a new question or by first giving your opinion on something and then asking what your partner thinks about it

Note! You don't have to have time to cover all the prompt questions, as long as you speak for about 5 minutes.

  • The video must not be edited or compiled from small clips; the discussion should be recorded in one take – small pauses or mistakes are fine. If there is a long pause or confusion at some point, just make the recording slightly longer.

  • Make sure that both speakers’ faces are visible in the video and that both voices can be heard clearly.

  • You will first have 10 minutes to prepare in class, i.e. to think about the prompt questions. However, you may not write down your answers or opinions in advance.

After that, you will have 15 minutes outside the classroom to record the discussion, and the video must be submitted immediately before the end of the lesson.
