2. Text 10 - exercise 10a, p. 88

After reading the text, answer questions in exercise 10a in your own words.
Again, make a recording of your answers and send it here.

In addition, choose one of these famous quotes and explain why that particular quote, in your opinion, best describes happiness. Is there a quote that you don't agree with? You can put this analysis into a separate recording if you want to.

The secret of happiness is to admire without desiring. (Carl Sandburg)
Happiness is not something ready-made. It comes from your own actions. (Dalai Lama)
Happiness is like a butterfly; the more you chase it, the more it will elude you, but if you turn your attention to other things, it will come and sit softly on your shoulder. (Henry David Thoreau)
There is only one happiness in life, to love and be loved. (George Sand)
There is no happiness except in the realization that we have accomplished something. (Henry Ford)
True happiness comes from the joy of deeds well done, the zest of creating things new. (Antoine de Saint-Exupéry)

MATTHEW WALKER: SLEEP IS YOUR SUPERPOWER (TEDtalk April 2019)

Watch the video here:

https://www.ted.com/talks/matt_walker_sleep_is_your_superpower/

0:00-5:40 // 08:32- 12:05

1. Answer these questions after listening to the TEDtalk:

  1. How does getting enough deep sleep help you to learn new things?
  2. What effect does the daylight saving time have on the health of 1.6 billion people across the world?
  3. What happens to our white killer cells when we fall short on sleep even just for one night?
  4. What does the WHO have to say about nighttime shift work?
  5. Why living up to the old saying of ”I’ll sleep when I’m dead” is not very wise according to the scientists?

2. Lue teksti ja keskustele parin kanssa sen keskeisestä sanomasta suomeksi:

”Then finally, in taking a step back, then, what is the mission-critical statement here? Well, I think it may be this: sleep, unfortunately, is not an optional lifestyle luxury. Sleep is a nonnegotiable biological necessity. It is your life-support system, and it is Mother Nature's best effort yet at immortality. And the decimation of sleep throughout industrialized nations is having a catastrophic impact on our health, our wellness, even the safety and the education of our children. It's a silent sleep loss epidemic, and it's fast becoming one of the greatest public health challenges that we face in the 21st century.”

Mother Nature, throughout the course of evolution, has never had to face the challenge of this thing called sleep deprivation. So she's never developed a safety net, and that's why when you undersleep, things just sort of implode so quickly, both within the brain and the body. So you just have to prioritize.”

3. Discuss:

  • How much sleep per night do you think is a healthy dose for a person of your age?
  • What downsides do you know there are from a bad night's sleep? Share your own experiences.
  • What do you think you could do to improve your own sleeping habits?
  • Why do you think sleeping enough is particularly important for people in their teens?

3. Sleep is your superpower answers + discussion

Watch the Ted Talk, record your answers to both tasks 1 and 3 and send them to me for assessment.
