1 Sport should be compulsory

Participating in sport has many proven benefits: psychological, social and physical. For this reason, it should be compulsory for all students to participate in at least one sport until they matriculate. Discuss whether you agree or disagree with this statement.

2 “Sport is not just a matter of life and death. It’s more important than that.”

Considering the above quote by Bill Shankly, football player and manager for Liverpool, discuss the role sport plays in society today.

3 Going, going, gone

If you could choose one place to go to on your next holiday, where would it be? Describe the place. Which country is it in? Is it a city or the countryside? What you would do there? Why you would like to spend your holiday there?

4 Going solo?

Do you think it’s better to travel on your own, or with a group of friends? Write a blog for a travel site discussing the advantages and disadvantages of travelling alone or with friends.

5 Let’s talk about music

A famous musician will be visiting your school, and you have been asked to write a speech about the importance of music in young people’s lives today.
You may consider the following points: different types of music, the effect of music, popular musicians, why you like or dislike a particular song, local and international music, and so on.

6 Write a modern love story that ends with one of the following sentences. Give your composition a title.

• I watched him walk away, and I knew that I’d never see him again.
• She turned, looked at me and smiled: “What took you so long?” she said.
• “Don’t ever tell anybody how we met!”
• The wind was howling, the moon rose, and so ended the longest day of their lives.
