Assignment for debate absentees

PLEASE NOTE: This assigment applies only to the students who are not able to attend the debate class on 20.10.2022.

In order to develop a sense for critical thinking, it is necessary to consider both sides of an issue. In this assignment you should come up with a societal proposition that you deem relevant and write both an affirmative and negative statement relating to said proposition. Write at least 4 sentences for each statement to illustrate your arguments and views.
Return your texts to this folder in a single PDF file at the latest on 27.10.2022 -- one week after the debate class.

Example proposition: E-cigarettes should be banned in Finland

Example affirmative: E-cigarettes are especially common amongst teenagers, and as such they should be banned to protect the safety of our youth. They contain less nicotine than regular cigarettes but are nonetheless addictive and bad for one’s health. Furthermore, e-cigarettes are typically flavored in a way that disguises their toxicity, which arguably makes them even more dangerous than regular cigarettes. E-cigarettes of poor quality have also been known to explode and cause bodily harm to their users.

Example negative: E-cigarettes are no more dangerous than regular cigarettes, which are available in every convenience store in Finland. In fact, E-cigarettes can offer a safer alternative for those who are recovering from nicotine addiction. They may seem more appealing to the youth, but then again, teenagers are known to use alcohol, snus and regular cigarettes as well – items that are also not banned in Finland. Whatever harm E-cigarettes may cause could be effectively combatted with closer supervision and sales regulations instead of a full ban.

Vaillinaisten apuverbien may ja might eroavaisuudet

Vaillinaisten apuverbien päälimmäisenä erona on se, että apuverbi may kuvastaa tapahtumia hieman suurella todennäköisyydellä kuin apuverbiä might käytettäessä: esimerkiksi "It may rain in the evening" kuvastaa suurempaa varmuutta tai todennäköisyyttä sille, että illalla sataa vettä, kun taas "It might rain in the evening" kuvastaa pienempää varmuutta tai todennäköisyyttä illan vesisateen mahdollisuudelle. Suomennos näille lauseille on teknisesti sama (Illalla saattaa sataa vettä), mutta lauseissa on englannin kielessä hiuksenhieno merkitysero.

Keskeinen ero on myös se, että apuverbiä might käytetään myös ilmaisemaan konditionaalia (=voisi, saattaisi): esimerkiksi "If I had studied more, I might have passed the exam" (=Jos olisin opiskellut enemmän, olisin voinut/saattanut läpäistä kokeen).
