Summary

Objectives

  • Knowing the basic concepts of heredity, how traits are passed down from one generation to the next and what is their passing based on.
  • Understanding the structure of the chromosome.
  • Understanding that the determination of traits is affected by both genotype and phenotype.

Summary

  • Heredity means the transmission of traits from one generation to another.
  • The traits are caused by genes, or hereditary factors. Genes are contained in chromosomes formed from DNA.
  • All cells, except for germ cells, have 46 chromosomes. Germ cells have 23 chromosomes.
  • A genotype is inherited by an individual.
  • A phenotype is an entity influenced by the genotype and the environment, i.e. expression.
  • Keywords: heredity, chromosome, allele, genotype, phenotype
