The bilingual education in Kouvola

The bilingual education (English – Finnish) in Kouvola is organised at Eskolamäki School as what is known as ‘extensive bilingual education’, meaning that both Finnish and English are used in teaching. In the bilingual classes, students study according to the Finnish curriculum. In year 1, the focus is on learning to read and write in Finnish. English is gradually used every day and across all subjects, with the exception of Finnish language. The aim is for students to reach a level in English such that, by year 5 or year 6 at the latest, lessons can be taught mostly in English. The bilingual education continues in the upper classes. Students, whose first or second home language is English, receive strong instruction in Finnish as a second language.

Applying for the class

Applications are submitted through a separate application process via Wilma. Application period: 2–12 November 2026. Late applications will not be considered. If electronic application is not possible, a printable application form is available on the City of Kouvola website. The completed form should be returned to the principal or school secretary of Eskolanmäki School.

All children applying for the bilingual education take part in an aptitude assessment. The assessment evaluates, for example, linguistic awareness, conceptual understanding, the ability to follow verbal instructions, and readiness to learn in a bilingual education programme. The aim of the assessment is to see the child’s potential to benefit from the programme and to study successfully within it.
