Dyers Eve -Metallica

Tekijä: Aaro Salakka
Dear Mother
Dear Father
What is this hell you have put me through
Believer
Deceiver
Day in, day out, live my life through you
Pushed onto me what’s wrong or right
Hidden from this thing that they call life

Dear Mother
Dear Father
Every thought I’d think you’d disapprove
Curator
Dictator
Always censoring my every move
Children are seen but are not heard
Tear out everything inspired

Innocence
Torn from me without your shelter
Barred reality
I’m living blindly

Dear Mother
Dear Father
Time has frozen still what’s left to be
Hear nothing
Say nothing
Cannot face the fact I think for me
No guarantee, it’s life as is
But damn you for not giving me my chance

Dear Mother
Dear Father
You’ve clipped my wings before I learned to fly
Unspoiled
Unspoken
I’ve outgrown that fucking lullaby
Same thing I’ve always heard from you
Do as I say, not as I do

Innocence
Torn from me without your shelter
Barred reality
I’m living blindly

I’m in hell without you
Cannot cope without you two
Shocked at the world that I see
Innocent victim please rescue me

Dear Mother
Dear Father
Hidden in your world you’ve made for me
I’m seething
I’m bleeding
Ripping wounds in me that never heal
Undying spite I feel for you
Living out this hell you always knew

I chose this song, because I simply like it. I think this song is about overbearing parents and forcing religion/believes. Metallica's vocalist/rythm guitarist James Hetfield have said that this song is "rant" against his parents. His dad left him when he was 13 years old and his mother died 3 years later. She refused to take cancer treatment, because her scientic believes and religion. James has also said that his parents always prevented him to discover world by himself, because their religion encouraged insulating and alienating. English in this song is quite common English, so there was only few new sentences to me, exemple seething and spite.

This is one of my favourite metallica song and its nice thqt someone did an analysis on it. You described the thoughts hetfield had while writing thud song well and i also apprecite your explanation of why he was feeling what he felt towards his parents.
One point i would like to add to your analysis is the great angry guitar riff that fits the theme of the song perfectly.

this is definitely one of the best songs on the album. you analyzed the song briefly but at the same time well and clearly and told everything necessary. The song really tells about James Hetfield's childhood and how he grew up around a strict Christian faith.
the song's aggressive lyrics and riffs brings atmosphere and power to the song

I've heard this song before and I think it's from the better end of the album. Also your analysis on the song is very broad so it tells that you have done your research.
