The Funeral of Hearts - HIM

Love's the funeral of hearts
And an ode for cruelty
When angels cry blood
On flowers of evil in bloom

The funeral of hearts
And a plea for mercy
When love is a gun
Separating me from you

She was the sun shining upon
The tomb of your hopes and dreams so frail
He was the moon painting you
With its glow so vulnerable and pale

Love's the funeral of hearts
And an ode for cruelty
When angels cry blood
On flowers of evil in bloom

The funeral of hearts
And a plea for mercy
When love is a gun
Separating me from you

She was the wind, carrying in
All the troubles and fears you've for years tried to forget
He was the fire, restless and wild
And you were like a moth to that flame

The heretic seal beyond divine
A prayer to a god who's deaf and blind
The last rites for souls on fire
Three little words and a question: why?

Love's the funeral of hearts
And an ode for cruelty
When angels cry blood
On flowers of evil in bloom

The funeral of hearts
And a plea for mercy
When love is a gun
Separating me from you

The funeral of hearts
And an ode for cruelty
When angels cry blood
On flowers of evil in bloom

The Funeral of Hearts

I chose this HIM’s song, because I like this very much and there are interesting words in this song. I also like many of HIM’s songs because they have a beautiful melody and vibe that I like. I like to think about the stories behind the songs and there are often many ways to interpret them in HIM’s songs.

The Funeral of Hearts is song of love. I think several love songs are sad like this one. Perhaps because many people sometimes have problems in their love life and want support for love songs. It is also logical that then the songwriters make songs that people care about. Already the name of the song sounds sad because the word “funeral” becomes a sad feeling for most.

My favorite verse from this song is “A prayer to a god who's deaf and blind”. It’s a really interesting verse in my opinion. Often people may think that God is deaf and blind because they pray only when they are in need. I was also thinking about the verse “When angels cry blood”. I think is love so evil that angels cannot look without weeping and yet blood. And what would the world be like if no one loved each other?

I really like the singer’s way of interpreting this song. I also think the music video is great and I especially like the HIM’s logo engraved on the wood at the end of the song. I learned many new words from this song and many of the sentences are shaped to sound nice.

This writing makes a total change in my view of the song. At first I would have not paid even half of the words that much attention or think them so deeply. You are absolutely right when you say this is a sad song.
And I agree with your opinion about the melody: even for this heavier-than-normal-kind of music this song has good melody and the sound of the singer fits perfectly to the vibe.

Your analysis is very good and I like how you've found deeper meanings for the lyrics. I had to listen to the song a couple of times before I was able to collect my thoughts about it. I agree with you about the song being a sad love story, so started to think about different reasons behind the lyrics, that the songwrited might have had. The song sounds like the narrator of the story has gone through a lot of heartbreaks, even to the point where they refuse to love again and see a possibility of love as a threat. Just like you, I like the way the singer interprets the song and its lyrics. I think that this song is really good and it inspired me to listen to other HIM's songs, too.

I hardly ever listen to heavy music so this was a good chance for me to really listen and concentrate on it. Not so often I focus on lyrics on this type of music but now I realise that I may have missed a lot of good lyrics with deep meanings. I like how symbolic the lyrics are and how those can be interpretationed in many different ways.
From lyrics I got a thought that love can make many vulnerable. Love can have good and bad influence. Your thoughts about the phrase “A prayer to a god who's deaf and blind” were great.

Thanks to your and others interesting
analyzes I will from now on start to focus more on lyrics of the songs and try to find more deeper meaning behind them. Often I don't stop to think if there is something more deeper meaning than what is sayed.
