Early intervention-program

Early intervention-program is the school's way of reacting to absence from school

Going to school is student´s job. Guardians job is to support the student in positive attitude towards going to school and homework. Guardians have an important role in supporting children to create  a smooth school path. In some cases, there can be various reasons that lead to absence from school.

Inari municipality schools follow a program, that aims to offer support already in very early stage to students, who have an increasing amount of absence. Early intervention-program allows to prevent an cycle of non-attendance, and thus reduce remarkably the student’s risk of school- and social exclusion.

According the early intervention-program teachers follow students amount of absence. If it reaches more than 50 hours* teacher will have a discussion with the student and contact the guardians. The discussion aims to investigate if cases of absence has affected negatively to student´s schoolwork. If the amount of absence continues to increase and reach the amount of 75 hours are guardians contacted again. At this point the student will be guided to getting personal support from student welfare services. Teacher can also call in a meeting with guardians and for example school counsellor and/or school nurse. If necessary, a group of school welfare services will be formed. The goal is to resolve the reasons of non-attendance and find solutions to prevent these problems from occurring again in the future.

This way the early intervention-program creates possibilities for getting support from school welfare professionals as the amount of absent hours increase, and to find solutions to help students individually.

*The amount of hours is counted by every academic year. It includes absence that guardians have announced and granted leaves. Unauthorized absence must always be cleared immediately.
