Is it time to do away with capital punishment?
Esimerkkiaine

Few subjects divide public opinions more strongly than capital punishment. Some people
are firmly in favor of it, whereas others are completely against it. Despite the fact
that the majority of countries have abolished the death penalty, it is still in use
in over sixty countries, including China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and some states in the US.
However, human rights activists and organizations continue to campaign fiercely against
what they regard as an inhumane practice.

Supporters of the death penalty put forward a number of reasons for keeping the practice.
Firstly, they argue that it acts as a deterrent against crime. In other words, its very
existence prevents crime. In addition, they claim that certain crimes, such as murder,
are so evil that the people who commit them should pay with their life. What’s more, they
point out that it is simply too expensive and impractical to keep people in prison for life.

The main argument put forward by opponents of the death penalty, on the other hand, is
that mistakes have been and will continue to be made. For example, it is estimated that
as many as 39 executions have been carried out in the States even though there were serious doubts
about the prisoners’ guilt. Moreover, opponents claim that the death penalty is not only useless in
preventing crimes, but also that it may make martyrs out of murderers.

To conclude, in today’s climate of terrorism and other unforgivable crimes,
there needs to be an effective means of prevention as well as punishment. Nevertheless,
the old principle of ‘an eye for an eye’ will not bring back the dead. On the contrary, it will
only result in more deaths. For this reason, no one has the right to take a life, no matter
which side of the law they are on.

Dear Mr Joyce

I am writing to enquire about the Marketing Assistant job advertised in the Helsingin Sanomat of 10 March.

I have had a lot of opportunities to get new skills in marketing in my present position as a Marketing Assistant with OfficeStars Ltd. I am also kind of familiar with sales and exports. Anyway, I am always searching for new challenges.

Thank you for considering my application. I am available for an interview when it’s okay with you.

Best,

Matt Dawkins

A Text: Skeuomorphs Show Retro Is Always In

In 1889, H. Colley March noticed that some ancient artifacts had a retro look. They imitated elements from older objects. Bronze axes had “thong-work” like flint axes. Pottery bowls had patterns resembling basket weaving. March coined the term skeuomorph from Greek skéuos (container or tool) and morphḗ (shape), for these design throwbacks. But skeuomorphs aren’t confined to museums.

Electric candles: Whether they’re gleaming in chandeliers or flickering on a restaurant table, electric lights masquerading as candles are skeuomorphs.

Deleting files: When computer manufacturers decided to move their machines from the clutches of techies into the jittery hands of the general public, they thought skeuomorphic graphical user interfaces would make them comfortingly familiar.

Sounds can be skeuomorphic too. Camera phones don’t have mechanical shutters, but the electronically produced click reassures users that they’ve “snapped” a picture.
