Structure of a film review

A well-written film review typically consists of four main parts. Each part answers different questions to help you organise your ideas clearly and guide the reader.

 

1. Introduction
2. Summary of the plot
3. Comments on specific aspects
4. Your opinion and recommendation

 

In the first part of your review, you introduce the film and give some basic information. You can mention:

🔹 your general opinion

 

Here are some expressions you can use:

 

I recently watched a film called…

The film is a (romantic comedy / action thriller / historical drama)…

It stars… / The main role is played by…

Summary of the plot

In this part of the review, you give a short summary of the story. Don’t include spoilers or describe the ending. Just mention the main events and characters to help the reader understand what the film is about.

 

Here are some useful expressions you can use:

The main character is… / The film focuses on…

It is set in… / The story takes place in…

At the beginning of the film… / Later on… / In the end… (don’t give away the ending!)

Comments on specific aspects

In this part of the review, you give your opinion about different elements of the film. You don’t need to comment on everything — choose what stood out to you, either positively or negatively.
