Slaves

  • Mostly people became slaves when they were six.
  • Slaves were punished by whipping, shackling, hanging, beating and burning.
  • Slaves who worked on farm and plantations lived in a small house near the fields.
  • House slaves had less privacy because usually they used to sleep in the kitchen of the palace or in the stable with horses.
  • Usually the slaves were given one pair of clothes and they had to wear them for a year.
  • Slaves had no rights and they had to work 24 hours, seven days a week if their master said so.
  • Children were often sold when they knew how to work and they couldn’t see their parents again.
  • The slaves that lived in the castle did wear better clothes, they used to wear their master`s old clothes.
  • Young boys were the most expensive slaves to buy.
  • Women slaves were used as hairdressers, dressmakers, cook and servants for rich woman.
  • Some slaves used to work in mines and underground was hot and they did not have any water.
  • Even the poorest Roman citizens could own a slave.
  • If the slaves runs from their master then they could also die because that is their punishment.
  • The slaves worked extremely hard and were often treated poorly.
  • Most slaves were captured in times of war.
