9. Gold!

1828. A lovely little village in Georgia. It was a quiet and peaceful place. Women and children were in the forest picking blueberries, cherries and wild apples. This was the land of the Cherokee. Suddenly, a little boy ran into the village. He held something shining in his hand. Gold!

An Indian reporter at the time wrote: We have found gold. Perhaps this will improve our way of life. I would like to think so if we can only keep our hands on this yellow stone. Time will tell.
Unfortunately, thousands of whites went there, looking for gold. New laws made it possible for them to steal and kill as much as they wanted and there was no punishment.

Fall, 1837. Georgia. The President of the United States sent soldiers to drive all the Cherokees from their homes. These Eastern Indians had to move west. Thousands of Indians died in the long, long walk from Georgia to Oklahoma. This trip became known as the Trail of Tears. Legend says that the Cherokee mothers were so sad that the chiefs prayed for a sign to give them the strength to take care of the children. For every tear there grew a beautiful white rose. This is now known as the ‘Cherokee rose’ in the state of Georgia.

In the mid 19th century, on the plains of the American West, the Sioux, the Blackfeet and the Crow hunted buffalo, ate buffalo meat and made clothes, tents and tools from buffalo skin. But the white man came and they had to give their land away. In return, the government promised them schools, food and peace.

But then gold was found in South Dakota. The government wanted this valuable land but the proud and brave Sioux chiefs, like Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull, refused to give the whites their land. This meant war! The Indians defeated the US at the Battle of Little Big Horn. But, in the end, the Indians lost. The white man started to kill the buffalo and make money from buffalo skins. There was not enough food for the Indians. The proud Sioux had to move away to a reservation.

Today, there are about 300 reservations in the USA and life can be very hard there. The Apache Indians, however, nowadays live in fairly modern houses in the mountains of New Mexico and many have their own businesses. But American Indians no longer have the power they once had.

As Chief Seattle of the Suquamish Indians said in 1854:
“If we gave up our land to the great white chief in Washington, he says he would make sure we live a good and healthy life in a safe place with no more war. If we fought the White Man, we would win nothing. We would only suffer and lose everything. Our young men would be ready to die but old men like me, and mothers who have sons, know better. Our time is over.”
