Finland in May 2011

Summary of the meeting

Summary of the meeting in Finland
from the 24th to the 28 the of May 2011

The Finnish group wished everyone very welcome in Finland and Marianna gave everyone the visit timetable. We wished our deepest condolences for Julia in Germany, since she could not join us in Finland because of a very sad family incident.

The group went for a tour in the school. Keski-Palokka school is going to be moved back in its renovated building (where we started planning this project) in summer. The process is in a full go now, so the guests were asking why the pupils don’t have desks! We visited e.g. the auditorium, where pupils gave us a drumming performance, primary level classes, lower primary level classes, the hall where Pertti Karjalainen, the local artist, was working with the pupils, making paintings to the new school building.

After coffee Marianna explained everyone about filling in the final report. We began the work in 3 groups.

1. What have we been doing since the meeting in Turkey?

Finland: Finland has worked with the environmental and cultural topics of the studied buildings: Hannalea arranged a field trip with her collegue to the University area with a guided tour, Jon: Schauman castle is not open for the public so the class made scenes of the surroundings of the castle with play dough, Anne’s class invented a new function for the cow shed (a race track), Heikki’s group made a recipe book, Marianna’s class made a book about Finnish national music and instruments. We had a national costume show in February. Everyone has continued working with the web pages & documentations.

France: the group had worked a lot with sustainable development-themes. Christine had written a funny Recycled stories-book, Jean-Luc had studied cycling, and written a How to be a young eco-citizen-book, Virginie’s class had visited an old mill, and dyed fabrics with madder roots. Michele’s class had studied the different uses of wood and made a booklet of that. The French group had also continued working with the good citizen-theme and studied some important words in every participating country’s languages. Some classes had taken part in a French national tolerance theme and written postcards provided by the country.

Germany: Regina explained about the things the German team had done – according to her, mainly Julia! They had made a book “the Franconian cottage garden”, about the plants, history, festivals, decorations etc. The children had made lovely drawings of the gardens. Julia’s class had also painted eggs, and as a gift Regina gave one egg for every participant. They also brought some special Comenius house tea for everyone!!!

Ireland: Sarah has finished the work with her building , the court house. Last year they concentrated on history and this year the theme was the changes of the meaning of the house. Pupils studied also the street in front of the court house. Art gallery was a place to study light. Green school committee in the school organised e.g. WOW (walk on Wednesdays) and COW (cycle on Wednesdays) theme days. They were trying to involve every child in some way with nature conservation and arranged a spring cleaning around the school. They also studied the River Inagh. All this was linked to our Comenius project and at the same time the green school project.
.
Italy: Arianna gave us best regards from Mina. Italian team had made a school calendar about the Italian school system. It was also put in the internet. Italy had continued with the national dishes connected to the national festivals, and had made a booklet for every country “the Fasanese typical dishes”. Arianna shared a lovely brochure about Fasano, handling all the themes we have worked with during the project. They also had a Power Point presentation about …

Turkey: They visited the National Museum and the Energy museum. They didn’t have enough time to prepare any material, because the museum were closed until the 15 of May.

5. Future plans.

Germany might start a new project in the primary level (6 schools).
Turkey is involved in a sister school project with Romania that will go on one more year (private funding).
Italy might start a new c-project in drama education with seven schools. They have made an application and are waiting for the reply from the national agency.
Ireland might start a bilateral program in the future, maybe with Finland!
France will probably concentrate on a local environmental project.

Hopefully the contacts that we have made with the present program will last long!
