Die Biologielehrerin Marjut Mäkelä in Polen 7.10 - 11.10.2013

Teacher’s Exchange Program

I am Marjut Mäkelä and I teach biology in Upper Secondary School in Iitti, Finland. I was lucky to be a part of the Comenius program and have a chance to visit Poznan, Poland. On the 7th of October I and two students, Henna Puntti and Laura Lempinen, left for Poznan for five days.

At the airport we met the coordinator Elzbieta Goraczniak, the geography teacher Anna Kodyniak and the students´ host families. So Finnish students left with their host families and I left with Ela and Ania to Ela’s lovely home for a dinner. It was very kind of Ela that she had made the effort to make a delicious dinner for us.

Next morning we went to school, named IV LO Poznan. I met the principal, Agata Gutorska. She told me about the school and took me around the building. The school was very big compared to ours, there were about 600 students at school. I took part in a couple of georaphy and a couple of history classes. I was very glad to notice that Polish students respected their teachers. That is the thing that I sometimes miss in Finland, too. Most students we active in the lesson and it was nice to follow the classes. On the other day, I was in the biology class and I could follow the teaching pretty easily, even when the teacher spoke only Polish. In the English lesson the students had prepared questions and a puzzle about Poland for us. They had also baked for us and they even taught some Polish to us, which was fun. There wasn’t a warm lunch at school, like we have, but the students and teachers had their own sandwiches with them. Or you could buy something from the school cafeteria.

Besides that I was at school, after school many nice teachers spent some time with me and told about Poland, its culture and history. There were even some similarities in the history between Finland and Poland. With the teachers, I could visit many places, like The Royal-Imperial Route, The Great Theatre and The Imperial Castle. One day we visited the countryside outside the city with Joanna Zolkiewska and Anna Brodziszewska. I really enjoyed the day. We also visited the Botanical Garden and that was also very nice. On the last evening we had dinner together in a restaurant.

I found Polish people very kind and polite. I really liked them and I was lucky that I could enjoy their hospitality. I thank every teacher who spent time with me and whose lesson I visited. I would love to visit Poland again any time.
