This is a true story; or at least one of those urban legends. You know, the ones where somebody knows someone whose cousin was there, or who knew somebody who went to school with someone else who was there. Anyway, this is what happened:
1. It was (oli) freezing cold. 2. It was (oli) almost midnight on a dark January night. 3. There was (Oli) hardly anyone out in the city; the streets were almost empty. 4. There was (Oli) an old car parked on the corner of two streets. 5. It was the car (Juuri siitä autosta) people had been talking about for the past month, but nobody had ever seen who drove it or left it there. 6. There were (Oli) stories about the car, horror stories. 7. It was (Oli) always around Christmas that people said they saw the haunted car on the same street corner. The stories started a few years ago. 8. It's / It is (On) funny how everything unusual always turns into an urban legend, 9. isn't it (eikö olekin)?
That night 10. there were (oli) four college students walking along the street towards the car. 11. There had been / There'd been (Oli ollut) a big party at an old warehouse but this group of friends thought 12. it was (oli) time to go to bed. As they were approaching the car they thought 13. it was (oli) strange that nobody ever saw the driver. Suddenly they heard the engine starting, but 14. there wasn't (ei ollut) anybody in the car. 15. There was (Oli) a horrible scream behind them but as they turned to see who it was, the street was empty. Even the car had disappeared. 16. There was (oli) only a strange fog. The students were scared and quickly ran to their dorm.
The next morning 17. there was (oli) an article in the newspaper. According to the newspaper, 18. there had been / there'd been (oli ollut) an accident at the same crossroads where they had seen the car. The previous night, just before midnight, 19. there had been / there'd been (oli ollut) an arrest. The driver was finally caught. Since then 20. there haven't been / there have not been (ei ole ollut) any stories about the strange car. But that’s just a coincidence, right?
