How to support your child's language learning

Supporting Your Child’s Language Learning at Home

Studying in bilingual education requires commitment to language learning from both the pupil and the guardians. Language development requires a great deal of repetition and diverse practice, both at school and outside of school. For pupils in bilingual education it is important to support the development of both languages equally. Mastery of both languages promotes participation in society and opens pathways to further studies.

Guardians can support their child’s language development and learning (Finnish or English) in a variety of different ways. Some examples are:

  • reading children’s literature with your child
  • visiting the library to borrow books in the target language
  • watching children’s programmes in the target language
  • participating in guided extracurricular activities
  • helping with homework by:
    • showing curiosity and interest in the child’s homework
    • supporting the completion of spelling homework (grades 1–2)
    • encouraging careful completion of assignments
    • asking the child to teach vocabulary to an adult
    • listening to reading assignments
