About the material
This material demo is designed as part of a Master´s thesis at the University of Lapland. The purpose of the thesis is to develop a functional material for bilingual/CLIL visual arts teaching in Finland. The material is built around the objectives and requirements of the National Core Curriculum (2014).
Before the material was made, a questionnaire was carried out. The questionnaire was posted to visual arts teachers around the country and the aim was to find out which themes, techniques and materials the respondents found most important to include in the material.
Thie results of the questionnaire have been kept in mind while building the material. While some techniques and themes are not included in the finished chapters of the demo version, most have been included in the section drafts. Additionally, two bilingual visual arts books from different countries have been analysed for extra information on building a CLIL textbook.
How to use the material
The material contains four main chapters and an extra chapter (The Art Project). The chapters can be studied in order or they can be mixed to suit the needs of the class. The first chapter goes through the basic elements of visual arts such as colour and shape and is a good starting point for the other chapters. The extra chapter (The Art Project) goes through the basic principles of creating a learning portfolio, working in a group, and the process and methods of making art. The chapter also instructs the student on how to create a more in-depth art project. This chapter can be used to back up teaching throughout the material or it might be used as a basis for a final project at the end of the year.
At the beginning of each chapter, you will find the objectives from the national core curriculum that the chapter includes. At the bottom of each section, you can find the objectives assigned to each task of the section.
Throughout the material, you will find different information categories. These are used to make the most important terms and pieces of trivia more noticeable and easier to understand. Here is a brief overview.
Key terms – in each section of the material, the most important words and terms are listed at the top.
Fun facts – this category contains pieces of trivia on the subject, and are intended to arouse interest.
Language info - these boxes provide extra information on language aspects.
The tasks provided in the material are arranged in three categories based on their type. The categories are as follows.
Think – in these tasks, the students will work either alone or in pairs. The idea of the tasks is to think about and discuss the subject to gain more insight.
Test – these tasks are short tasks meant for testing out different techniques. The tasks in this category are meant to be kept short and introduce the techniques better to the student.
Create – in the final category, tasks are slightly more difficult and require creative thinking. These tasks can be done over several lessons or shortened to suit the needs of the class.
