3 Visual and Digital Media

Digitalised visual culture

In this chapter, you will learn about different types of digital visual culture. We continue with the idea of images influencing thought. First, we will look at photography with a focus on documentary photography and photojournalism. Next, we continue on to advertising, one of the most common ways our thoughts are being altered! We will also take a look at graphic design and typography while we're at it.

Next, we will move on to moving pictures with one section on filmmaking and movies and another on animation, where you get to test your skills in making moving images. Finally, we end the chapter with the visual culture of video games.

Objectives for this chapter (NCC 2014)

In this chapter, the pupil is encouraged to observe and discuss visual culture with a focus on digital media (O1, O2). Different views and opinions are expressed through various visual and digital materials and techniques, to deepen the pupil's skills and knowledge of visual production (O3, O4). The pupil is guided to experiment with visual work, drawing ideas especially from their own area of interest such as specific types of films or video games (O5). The expression of opinions and the application of visual means of communication and influence in images are encouraged (O6). The pupil is guided to apply different means of visual interpretation. A critical viewing of images is encouraged, as well as the examination of visual culture in different cultures and societies. An emphasis is placed on the significance and influence of images on the individual, the community and the society in different times and cultures. (O7, O8.) The pupil is also guided to express their opinions and take a stand on the values expressed in visual culture, and use means of influence in their own images (O10, O11).

Key content areas (NCC 2014) in this chapter

C1 Pupils' own visual cultures: Contents are selected from the visual cultures the pupils participate in independently, such as movies, video games and social media photographs. These include phenomena that reshape the pupils' own visual cultures and are significant in their lives. The significance of these cultures is discussed in teaching and they are used as the basis of visual work.

C2 Visual cultures in the environment: The contents are selected from a variety of environments and media cultures. The development of the pupils' understanding of broader questions concerning media is supported through critical viewing of media images and the examination of different aspects of media culture. A focus is placed on visual cultures from the immediate surroundings of the pupils, such as recent advertisement campaigns or the pupils' favourite films.

C3 The worlds of visual arts: Contents are selected from different times and cultures, and their impact on the pupils' immediate surroundings is examined through discussion and tasks. Pupils focus on different conceptions of art, and explore the question of what might be considered art and what not. The impact of cultural diversity is discussed from the viewpoints of the individual and the society.
