This version of the periodic table features some essential elements and a few properties:

• the chemical symbol, consisting of at most two letters, the first always capitalized
• the atomic number, or the number of protons in the atom above the chemical symbol
• the period (1 -- 7), or row, tells the number of electron shells in the atom
• the group (I -- VIII), or column, tells the number of electrons on the outermost shell in the atom

In addition,

• metals are framed in blue
• metalloids are framed in light blue
• nonmetals are framed in orange
