Now that you are familiar with the trees, flowers, mosses and fungi of the forest, you can become a forest researcher!
Go to the forest (either alone or with the whole class) and investigate the kinds of plants you find there.
a) Write down what kind of a forest you are in (e.g. pine forest, mixed forest, birch forest).
b) Drop a pencil or a wooden stick on the ground.
c) Find out, which plant species is most common in the location where the pencil/stick fell. Write your findings down.
d) Walk two meters in a random direction and repeat the stages b and c.
e) Repeat the steps b-d for 25 times.
Finally, your findings should be similar to the following table.
Forest type: pine forest.
- lingonberry: 10
- ball reindeer lichen: 8
- haircap moss: 5
- no plants: 2.
f) Multiply your results by multiplying each number by four.
g) Write down your findings in the text field below and present them in class.
