Esimerkkilauseissa tekee ja katsovat ilmaisevat parhaillaan tapahtuvaa toimintaa: poika on juuri nyt tekemässä jotain laitonta ja kaverit katsovat koko ajan hänen maalaamistaan.

Englannissa käytetään tällöin kestopreesensiä, joka muodostetaan kahdesta osasta: -verbistä ja pääverbin ing-muodosta. Olla-verbin muoto riippuu tekijästä.

Kestopreesensin kieltomuodossa kieltosana not tulee -verbin jälkeen. Muodot voi lyhentää:

Muista, että kestopreesens ilmaisee, mitä tapahtuu parhaillaan, kun taas yleispreesens ilmaisee, mitä tapahtuu yleensä tai toistuvasti.

Kestopreesensin kanssa on usein sellaisia ajanilmauksia kuin right now, at the moment kun taas yleispreesensin kanssa sellaisia kuin often, usually, seldom, never.
