The Great Barrier Reef is a site of enormous variety and beauty, not to mention significance, on the north-east coast of Australia. It has been an Unesco World Heritage site since 1981 covering a huge area of 348,000 square kilometres and stretching from the shallow low-water mark along the mainland coast up to 250 kilometres offshore to the oceanic waters, over 2,000 m deep. Another amazing fact about the Reef is that it is one of a few living structures visible from outer space. (1)
1 Mitä ensimmäisessä kappaleessa kerrotaan Isosta Valliriutasta? (Mainitse kaksi asiaa.)
It is home to a vast number of marine fauna. Globally significant marine faunal groups include over 4,000 species of molluscs, over 1,500 species of fish, plus a great diversity of sponges, anemones, marine worms, crustaceans, and many others. Some 242 species of birds have been recorded in the Great Barrier Reef. Twenty-two seabird species breed on cays and some continental islands, and some of these breeding sites are globally significant; other seabird species also utilize the area. (2)

The Great Barrier Reef is a famous and popular tourist site. There are many ways in which one could explore the Reef. One could visit the Reef on board a catamaran, dive and snorkel among turtles and colourful fish, lie on the deck sunbathing or go on a glass-bottomed boat-tour. (3)
3 Miten Isoon Valliriuttaan voisi tutustua? (Mainitse kaksi asiaa.)
The Reef is in danger though. It has been affected by both natural and man-made factors. Natural ones being cyclones, crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks, and sudden large influxes of freshwater from extreme weather events. There is a range of human uses such as tourism, shipping and coastal developments that affect its ecosystem. It has been noticed that coral has started to bleach i.e. it starts dying off due to increase in water temperature. This bleaching has occurred three times in recent years – a record killing of shallow water corals has been detected in 2016, 2017 and in March 2020. (4)
4 Mitkä asiat uhkaavat Isoa Valliriuttaa? (Mainitse kaksi asiaa.)
Covid-19 has delivered unusual environmental benefits: cleaner air, lower carbon emissions, a break for wildlife. Now the big question is whether we can capitalise on this moment. Building the resilience of the Great Barrier Reef against all possible threats is more important than ever if we are to save it for the future. This can be done for example by improving water quality, increasing knowledge about fishing and its effects, educating people about the harm marine debris causes. Maybe in doing so we will be able to save the Great Barrier Reef from the effects of climate change. We have seen many positive effects in just a short period of time. It would be unimaginable for anyone not to recognize these and act now to protect the Great Barrier Reef. (5)
