‘A man’s home is his castle’, goes the familiar saying. Home is a place of importance to most of us, but the different aspects and characteristics that are most valued tend to vary. Some appreciate space, some cherish compactness. You would think that most homes are quite ordinary, but some are far from it. For example there is a house in Mexico in the shape of a giant seashell – not something you see every day, right?

Compact is the word of the day. In metropolitan areas, where space is scarce, every square foot matters. Architects have to come up with extremely creative ideas to take advantage of all the possibilities. Perhaps the slimmest house in the world can be found in Poland: situated between two buildings, and the widest point of the dwelling is only 152 cm wide!
Another way to achieve unique places of residence is to renovate old buildings. These can be places that were previously used for entirely different purposes. A decommissioned water tower could easily become a nice abode, and converting an old church to a cozy family home is perfectly feasible. Another marvellous example of this kind of upcycling is a commercial aircraft that nowadays functions as a houseboat.

A clever solution that is increasing in popularity is to build homes in shipping containers – this combines both the aim of being compact, as well as the effort to recycle. Furthermore, converting a container into a home is relatively affordable.
Extraordinary, unusual housing is usually situated far from the hustle and bustle of the cities. Nature acts as a powerful inspirer. There are dozens of examples of cave dwellings – and now we are talking about modern ones with all the luxuries, not ancient relics. You can have all the contemporary amenities, while having a natural waterfall flowing through the lounge. Caves are not the only places in nature that can offer accommodation: there are also condos that have been carved out of giant trees.

Not everyone is after achieving some peace and quiet though: there’s a house in Japan that is totally transparent! The house is located in a busy neighbourhood in Tokyo. The only place you can have some privacy is in the bathroom, as all the other spaces are perfectly visible from the outside. Hopefully the residents don’t have anything to hide!
It is also possible for a home to outwardly appear conventional, while the inside is anything but. Advances in technology have made it possible to have smart fridges and smart ovens, for example. This enables you to pick a recipe based on the contents of your refridgerator as well as signal the oven to start heating up – and all this is done remotely. Perhaps the next step will be a home that cleans itself?

Lue teksti ja vastaa kysymyksiin suomeksi. Huomaa, että jokaiseen vastaukseen vaaditaan kaksi asiaa.

The Great Barrier Reef is a site of enormous variety and beauty, not to mention significance, on the north-east coast of Australia. It has been an Unesco World Heritage site since 1981 covering a huge area of 348,000 square kilometres and stretching from the shallow low-water mark along the mainland coast up to 250 kilometres offshore to the oceanic waters, over 2,000 m deep. Another amazing fact about the Reef is that it is one of a few living structures visible from outer space. (1)

1 Mitä ensimmäisessä kappaleessa kerrotaan Isosta Valliriutasta? (Mainitse kaksi asiaa.)

It is home to a vast number of marine fauna. Globally significant marine faunal groups include over 4,000 species of molluscs, over 1,500 species of fish, plus a great diversity of sponges, anemones, marine worms, crustaceans, and many others. Some 242 species of birds have been recorded in the Great Barrier Reef. Twenty-two seabird species breed on cays and some continental islands, and some of these breeding sites are globally significant; other seabird species also utilize the area. (2)

2 Kerro Ison Valliriutan eläimistöstä. (Mainitse kaksi asiaa.)

The Great Barrier Reef is a famous and popular tourist site. There are many ways in which one could explore the Reef. One could visit the Reef on board a catamaran, dive and snorkel among turtles and colourful fish, lie on the deck sunbathing or go on a glass-bottomed boat-tour. (3)

3 Miten Isoon Valliriuttaan voisi tutustua? (Mainitse kaksi asiaa.)

The Reef is in danger though. It has been affected by both natural and man-made factors. Natural ones being cyclones, crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks, and sudden large influxes of freshwater from extreme weather events. There is a range of human uses such as tourism, shipping and coastal developments that affect its ecosystem. It has been noticed that coral has started to bleach i.e. it starts dying off due to increase in water temperature. This bleaching has occurred three times in recent years – a record killing of shallow water corals has been detected in 2016, 2017 and in March 2020. (4)

4 Mitkä asiat uhkaavat Isoa Valliriuttaa? (Mainitse kaksi asiaa.)

Covid-19 has delivered unusual environmental benefits: cleaner air, lower carbon emissions, a break for wildlife. Now the big question is whether we can capitalise on this moment. Building the resilience of the Great Barrier Reef against all possible threats is more important than ever if we are to save it for the future. This can be done for example by improving water quality, increasing knowledge about fishing and its effects, educating people about the harm marine debris causes. Maybe in doing so we will be able to save the Great Barrier Reef from the effects of climate change. We have seen many positive effects in just a short period of time. It would be unimaginable for anyone not to recognize these and act now to protect the Great Barrier Reef. (5)

5 Millä eri keinoilla Isoa Valliriuttaa voitaisiin yrittää pelastaa? (Mainitse kaksi asiaa.)
