Optional homework tasks

Do only the homework tasks that you feel will help you reach your learning goal.

First week (after we completed pages 6-8):
  • If you found the language focus section on page 7 too difficult, please review the grammar reference on page 139 and revise the language focus exercise.
  • Plan to pair up with some outside of class (online or in person). Using the statements you each created in exercise 5 on page 8, practice responding appropriately
    • Remember these responses from the audio 1.5 --
      • Me neither!
      • Really?
      • Well, don't ask me.
      • I know.
      • Just Mondays, eh?
      • Who on earth told you that?
  • If you purchased the workbook, complete unit 1 exercises 1 - 7 (after the practise section is complete)
  • Visit the publisher's website to practise the grammar here

Second week (after we completed pages 9-11):
  • write a message (in the discussion forum below) about the most interesting person you met in the airport (during the extra exercise). Pretend that the reader is a good friend.
  • Informal writing - complete ex. 4 on page 103: I suggest that you type your letter in Word; change the language to English so that Work underlines some of your errors. You can copy and paste your letter into the discussion forum below and/or send it to me at rachel.kuisma@gmail.com
  • Vocabulary work - complete ex. 4 on page 10. (meet with your partner in person or online or do it individually)

Third week (after completing page 12-13):
  • Visit the publisher's website for extra vocabulary practice, everyday English, and audio and vidio downloads here
  • if you purchased the workbook, complete Unit 1 exercises 8 & 9 (after the Vocabulary & Pronunciation section)
  • pratice speaking with the audio 1.10 and/or arrange to meet (online or in person) with a classmate to act out a few of the conversations from tapescript 1.10
    • improvise, make the conversations your own
    • record it if you like
  • make a dialogue using 4-6 of the compound words from exercise 5 on page 12.
    • this can be done individually or with a classmate (e.g., online). You can act out your dialogue in class next week or make a video or audio recording for us, or simply add the text to the discussion forum.
  • if you purchased the workbook, complete Unit 1 exercises 10 - 12 (after the Everyday English section)
  • complete the unit test (get it from your teacher)
  • transfer some words from the unit's word list (p. 153) into your vocabulary notebook and add details to help you learn them.
  • practice speaking with the various recordings from Unit 1.
    • You can listen and repeat, trying to emulate the stress.
    • Or you could try to speak at the same time as the recording.
    • Do not read the tapescript while doing this exercise
    • Do it only once. Do not memorize the lines, but simply practice the stress.
    • Record yourself if you like.
