Welcome to Svenska skolan i Kouvola
A Long Tradition of Swedish-Language Education
In Kouvola, there is a long-standing tradition of education in Swedish. Svenska skolan i Kouvola offers instruction for grades 1–6. Currently, we have students in grades 2–6. The school is a so-called language island – a Swedish-speaking school in an otherwise Finnish-speaking municipality.
Who Can Join Us?
Svenska skolan is open to all children in Kouvola who wish to study in Swedish. Children do not need to speak perfect Swedish when they start – our students come from diverse linguistic backgrounds and levels. Typically, children attend a Swedish-speaking daycare and preschool, which provides a natural transition into school.
The First Step: Daghemmet Lekis
The Swedish-language educational path in Kouvola begins at Daghemmet Lekis in Kuusankoski. The daycare is run by Folkhälsan and offers early childhood education and preschool activities in Swedish, in a safe and inspiring environment. The daycare has space for 25 children and operates under Kouvola’s service voucher system.
Continuing Education in Swedish
After primary school, students can continue their education in Swedish at Kotka Svenska Samskola. This is a private unit school offering instruction in grades 1–9 as well as upper secondary education in Swedish in the Kymenlaakso region.
A matriculation examination in Swedish opens doors to higher education – both in Finland and abroad.
Cooperation with Parents
We have an active parent association that meets several times during the school year to promote community and collaboration between home and school.
Multilingualism in Everyday Life
Many of our students have at least one Finnish-speaking parent. It is perfectly possible to support your child in Finnish or another home language. Multilingualism is a strength – and a natural part of our daily life. Communication with teachers flows smoothly in Swedish, Finnish, and English.
School Transport
Kouvola is a geographically large municipality, and our students come from many different areas. If the school journey exceeds three kilometers (for grades 1–2) or five kilometers (for grades 3–6), school transport by taxi may be available.
