1) Can & May:
- voivat olla toisinaan synonyymeja: We can do this. / We may do this. = Me voimme tehdä tämän.


2) Can VS Be able to:
- Can = yleinen kyky: I could read when I was 5. 
- Be able to = ajallisesti rajattu: I was able to dance although my leg was broken.


3) Must VS Have to: 
- Must = sisäinen pakko: I must learn this because I want to get into medical school.
- Have to = ulkoinen pakko: I have to learn this or my mom will kill me. 


4) May VS Might:
- You may know this. / You might know this. = Saatat tietää tämän; May varmempaa ehkä, might epävarmempaa


5) Puhujan arvelu:
- They can´t have know about this before. = He eivät ole voineet tietää tästä aiemmin (opettaja arvelee muttei tiedä varmaksi)
- They may have heard the news already. = He ovat saattaneet kuulla jo uutiset (kaverit arvelevat mutta eivät tiedä varmaksi)
- They must have had a clue. = Heillä on varmaankin ollut aavistus (taaskaan kaverit eivät tiedä varmaksi mutta epäilevät)
