English, week 5 - listening comprehension tests and urbanisation & animals

This week, we will practise your listening comprehension skills. In addition, we will do a couple of listening comprehension tests on sanomapro.fi (Kompassi).

In addition to the listening comprehension tests, we will be studying the effects of urbanisation on animals living close to city centres. This goes well with this week's general theme of urbanisation.

Story and exercises on British Council's website: http://learnenglishteens.britishcouncil.org/study-break/graded-reading/animals-city-level-3

Work in pairs:
- listen to the text (audio above)
- read through the text (the link above)
- do the tasks on the website where the text is
- In addition to the tasks on the website, make 5 questions based on the contents of the text for other students to answer. Share your questions in the folder on this page.
- make a wordlist and share it in the folder reserved for them
- translate the bits from the text into good Finnish (see below)

Animals in the city - translate into Finnish

  • in recent years
  • There have been bears in Vancouver parks
  • are they considered a danger or a pest
  • baboons have started coming into residential areas on the edge of the city to feed
  • understandably, many city residents don't welcome their presence
  • Some have been injured or killed in car accidents and others have been electrocuted
  • The monitors' job is to chase baboons out of urban areas or catch them and release them in the countryside
  • it is proving hard to stop baboons from coming back to the city once they see it as a source of easy food
  • Apart from damage to parks and gardens, the pigs have also caused several traffic accidents as they are slow to move off roads when cars are approaching
  • Instead of shooting them, they have put up fences and made it illegal to feed the pigs
  • to get from one part of their territory to another
  • Hopefully, city councils, conservationists and city residents can work together and find imaginative ways to keep bigger animals out of cities without harming them
