So, thanks 3. to your different schedules, meeting one isn't even very likely, is it? 4. On the whole, meeting a bear isn't very common these days. But however unlikely meeting one might seem, 5. in my opinion it doesn't hurt to be prepared. 6. To my mind, running might be the reaction most people have the first time they come face to face with a bear. Indeed, the first time I saw a bear up close with two friends, we 7. by no means remembered to follow protocol. All the advice we had been given seemed to have been 8. in vain. We bolted simultaneously, in a desperate effort to save our own skin. There was no help 9. at hand. After 150 metres we stopped to catch our breath, legs like jelly. Regardless 10. of our fear, we turned back and saw a big old black bear licking a jar of maple syrup. It had only been a warning charge, and we had learnt our lesson. Bears can run as fast as a racehorse on open, flat ground, so owing 11. to their speed, running and provoking a bear to chase you is not the best option. You are better off shouting 12. in a loud voice. Or playing dead.
