1. "I'm sick today."
a) Mary tells me (that) she is sick today.
Mary tells me on johtolause. Pronomini muuttuu, mutta aikamuodot eivät muutu.
b) Mary told me (that) she was sick that day.
aikamuoto muuttuu imperfektiksi, koska johtolauseen verbi on imperfektissä
today muuttuu that day
2. "I have often been sick lately."
a) Mary goes on telling me (that) she has often been sick lately.
b) Mary went on telling me (that) she had often been sick lately.
Suoran esityksen perfekti muuttuu pluskvamperfektiksi, koska johtolauseen verbi oli imperfektissä.
3. "I will call you tomorrow."
a) She promises to me (that) she will call me tomorrow.
b) She promised to me (that) she would call me the following day / the next day.
Futuuri muuttuu konditionaaliksi, koska johtolause on imperfektissä.
